Looking for suggestions or advice on planting a privacy 'wall'

  • location: south Okanagan / bc / Canada (Very dry, almost desert. 90-100 degree summers, rarely far below freezing in the winter)

  • not much rainfall, but unlimited ability to water due to agro irrigation in the area (1000s of acres of orchards and vineyards nearby)

  • most landscape yards have advised against evergreen hedges as most die in the first year.

  • fairly sandy soil but I am open to digging an oversize trench and backfilling with top soil

Our ideal outcome would be 110’ long, 10’ high and as thick as necessary to block our neighbors yard. I am not expecting this result immediately, I know it could take years but I just want to start with the right plants.

So far we have been told to try grasses or vines. The downside is we would lose the privacy in the winter, right? Unless there is a species that stays full/green through winter.

There are plenty of properties nearby that grow massive rose bushes and other hedge-like bushes. Are these types capable of providing privacy in a few years?

Thanks so much for any input.
