Suddenly swampy yard portion won't dry out

Hello, I have lived in my house in Maryland for around 10 years and have a new and unusual problem. The house is 50 years old, the detached garage is about 7 years old.

For the last three weeks a section of my yard has turned into a swamp and even in the summer heat, it has not been drying out.

back corner of garage

The swamp is located at the back corner of my detached garage. The garage sits at the top of a small hill, about 30 feet behind the house; the problem area is on the downhill slope of the hill which continues downwards at a slight angle for an additional 10+ feet before it levels out. The ground downhill from the swamp seems fine, it seems to be isolated around the garage corner.

The mud around this area is area has become a shoe sucking mud. There is also dampness in the soil along the back of the garage foundation.

closer view of the problem

The backyard is bordered by other backyards; so water and sewage lines should not be present. We’ve had a lot of rain this summer, but not for over a week now. In the past, any excessive moisture would sit at the very bottom of the hill and dry up quickly.

I’ve got no idea what I can do to clean this up myself, or what type of company to call for assistance in this type of situation. I’d like to prevent lasting foundation damage and stop it from turning into a bug breeding ground.

I’d welcome some advice, thank you.
