I bought a home last year and have been steadily improving it, one of the things that I wanted to improve was the landscaping in front of my walk out porch given that it use to be a rock garden but turned into a weed garden. I dug about 8 inches down to clear out the bulk of rock then realized that the main barrier was wood from the actual deck. From watching recent rains, it’s clear that water sits in the little basin I have dug and most likely will upon filling it with soil.
My question - is landscaping tarp the best barrier to prevent water from sitting upon the wood? Second, given the low drainage - should I use a mixture of sand and soil or should I lay a gravel base?
