Help with garden stepping stones

I’ve inherited a number of stones (probably around 100+) that are currently placed in various spots within flower beds. They don’t look nice, and my plan is to use them as possible stepping stones. Some are more flat then others, none are truly flat, some are very large, others are small.

Here are a couple of pics:

My questions are as follows:

1 - Do these look like they would make acceptable stepping stones, since they aren’t completely flat?

2 - How to go about putting them in the ground? Should I add sand underneath? Gravel first and then sand? Or can I simply place them in the dirt after I cut away the grass?

3 - I live in a relatively cold climate (hardiness zone 7a) with a lot of rain/snow, does this make a big difference in my approach to placing the stones properly in my lawn?

Thanks!
